Frequently asked questions
How does City AED Nederland take care of everything for us?
Everyone agrees that a heart-safe living and working environment is vitally important. But arranging this properly and sustainably involves a great deal. Think of fire safety: installing a fire extinguisher alone is not enough. The same applies to heart safety.
Fortunately, we have experience in this and can take care of the entire process, for example by:
> Advising on how many AEDs are needed and where they should be placed.
> Adapting our approach to the way your own organisation works.
> Installing City AEDs at the location.
> Taking full responsibility for maintenance and management of the City AED, 24/7.
> 24/7 availability when a City AED has been called for a resuscitation. We stay in contact with responders and arrange refurbishment of the AED.
> Taking on ownership.
> Taking on the risk of vandalism and theft.
> Arranging or preparing communications for residents and stakeholders, such as an information leaflet or a webpage for residents.
> ...in fact, we take care of everything.

Can a City AED be installed on a charging point or parking meter?
Yes, a City AED can be mounted on a charging point. This innovative idea was successfully introduced in 2018. City AED Nederland provides comprehensive, long-term management and maintenance of these AEDs. Attaching an AED to a post or parking meter must always be discussed with the municipality.
What is an AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device that can restore the heart’s rhythm in a person experiencing cardiac arrest by delivering electric shocks. The sooner a defibrillator is used, the greater the chance of survival without permanent damage to the brain and other organs. The device tells the user what to do, allowing it to be used by non-professional responders too. Taking a CPR course is recommended, so you can learn and practise connecting and operating it.
How should the City AED outdoor cabinet be installed?
The City AED outdoor cabinet is preferably mounted on a wall. This is straightforward, using four 8 mm wall plugs, which are hidden behind the cabinet once it is mounted. The cabinet has an alarm, LED lighting and energy-efficient 24-volt heating. It plugs into an indoor power socket, much like a laptop adapter. A small hole must be drilled through the wall for the 24-volt cable. The heating keeps the City AED at a minimum of 5°C, which is necessary for correct operation. Electricity costs approximately €20 per year, depending on how cold the winter is.
Is a City AED dangerous if used incorrectly?
No, you do not need to worry about that. When you connect a City AED to a casualty, it automatically determines whether a shock is needed. If no shock is needed, nothing happens. You do not need to worry that someone will receive a shock when it is not appropriate. The device measures and controls everything itself. A City AED is, of course, not a toy, but if children were to “play” with it, this would, figuratively speaking, be no more dangerous than playing with a laptop.

Why make my property portfolio heart-safe with City AEDs?
By making your properties heart-safe with City AEDs that are accessible 24/7, you give residents and the surrounding community twice the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. You ensure that an AED can reach the casualty in time. Completed projects show that residents are very pleased and grateful to have a City AED near their home or office. It greatly increases their sense of safety and even brings residents together. With City AED Nederland, you can make your properties heart-safe easily and sustainably for just a few tens of cents per home per month. It also contributes to a higher GRESB score.
Background: Every year, 17,000 people in the Netherlands experience a cardiac arrest, at home, at work or in the street. If CPR WITH AN AED is provided within 6 minutes, the chance of survival doubles. This could save 2,500 lives each year! The Netherlands has a unique alert system with more than 225,000 citizen responders. When the 112 emergency service suspects a cardiac arrest, these responders are automatically alerted and directed to the casualty and the nearest AED. They begin CPR before the emergency services arrive. This is vitally important, because the chance of survival falls by 10% per minute during a cardiac arrest. However, there are not yet enough AEDs accessible 24/7 to reach every casualty in time. Together with City AED Nederland, you can help change this.

What are the costs?
City AED Nederland specialises in making properties heart-safe. Together with you, we determine the best location for the City AED. It can be installed at existing properties or new developments, either by us or by your own technical team. We then take full responsibility for management and maintenance, 24/7, for 5 or 10 years. This life-saving provision is available from €0.30 per front door per month, depending among other things on the size of the building. For this modest amount, you help save lives while improving residents’ sense of safety, your service level and your GRESB score.

What does a City AED Real Estate project involve?
If you are considering making your properties heart-safe, we would be happy to explain the options.
Together with you, we discuss your requirements and preferences, and use your portfolio overview to determine the best locations for City AEDs. This gives you a clear picture of the scope and costs in advance.
We distinguish between existing properties and new developments, and between single-family and multi-family homes. It is important that a City AED is available within 6 minutes for every resident, to maximise the chance of survival.
For existing buildings and completed new developments, we can inspect the site. During the development phase, we can advise on the location using technical drawings, so the City AED can be included in the plans.
City AEDs are installed by us or by your own technical team. We then take full responsibility for management and maintenance, 24/7, including the risks of vandalism and theft, for 5 or 10 years. We ensure that the City AED is registered in the national 112 database so it can be found quickly in the event of a cardiac arrest. You do not have to worry about it.
It is good practice to inform residents that a City AED is being installed and where it is located. We have a range of texts, leaflets and webpages that have been used successfully in similar projects. These provide a solid basis for quickly preparing clear resident information tailored to your organisation.

Which properties can be made heart-safe with a City AED?
Any development with single-family homes, multi-family homes or commercial premises can be made heart-safe. Each type requires its own approach, taking account of factors such as entrances, building height, the surrounding area and any public AEDs already nearby.
City AED Nederland knows where public AEDs are already available in the Netherlands and, just as importantly, where they will be installed in future. We are rapidly installing and managing more City AEDs across the country.

City AED improves the GRESB score… how?
One indicator in the GRESB score concerns health and safety, and a City AED contributes to this. Below is the GRESB organisation’s position:
…it would allow participants to tick "Asset-level safety (for tenants)" in PD2 (assuming they have a supporting policy documents to support such action. Same goes for Occupational safety if the same action is performed for employees (rather than tenants).
City AED Nederland ensures that your organisation receives the appropriate documentation and reports — supporting policy documents — that meet the GRESB criteria.

How is liability arranged?
City AED Nederland manages the City AEDs 24/7. Under the leasing arrangement, City AED Nederland remains the owner and is therefore liable for damage that could be caused by the City AED or its use.
